The best way to find an expert witness is to ask legal counsel who can refer you to someone with the realm of expertise you require.  Many attorneys will go through their firm or business network looking for the ideal candidate. One thing they must keep in mind is will the testimony be of a written or oral nature. The expert witness may be interviewed by yourself and/or your attorney prior to retaining them. You need to look for someone who can think and talk on their feet with authority as they may have to respond to questioning.

When an expert witness is preparing for the case, they should be asking you many questions and require the case documentation. They also need to admit what they do not know to prevent them from being exploited on the stand, by being asked a question they do not have expert knowledge of.

Undoubtedly your expert witness needs to know their subject. They will face cross-examination and their expertise and experience will be called into question. It is also vital the expert witness is  viewed as an advocate but focus on providing their opinion based on experience and that may not always be in your best interest. Therefore beforehand, it is important to know what their opinion is. If you and they disagree, you may well be better off seeking out someone whose views align with yours.
